And suddenly the calendar fills up with so many events, I can’t put them all on tonight. Instead I decided to write only about Thursday, and tomorrow I will add Friday and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. What is so strange is that I don’t see any more Christmas markets on the list – but a rainbow of diverse interesting activities and events. So if you have no julefrokosts to attend this weekend, you have a huge range of other options. That’s rather comforting, isn’t it?
Thursday, 1 December

HIV / AIDS remains a serious problem throughout the world. Worldwide, there are 36.9 million people living with HIV, and the disease claims many lives every year. There is no vaccine or cure for this disease, but today you can live a long life with HIV if you have access to medicine. More and more HIV-infected people in the world have access to treatment each year. In June 2015 15.8 million HIV-infected people had access to treatment – 2.2 million more than the year before, so things are moving forward! People living with HIV or affected by HIV are still faced with prejudice and discrimination. The first of December is WORLD AIDS DAY when we show our support for those who fight the disease every day. Come and join us as we light candles for HIV / AIDS-affected people throughout the world. We offer an exciting program in Aalborg:
15:00 to 17:00 – Torches lit at Østerågade
17:00 to 17:20 – AIDS Foundation’s annual address
17:20 to 18:00 – Torch procession from Nytorv with MSF
18:00 to 20:00 – Lecture at Studenterhuset on HIV / AIDS with Professor Henrik Ib Nielsen, chief physician of the infectious diseases department of Aalborg University Hospital (presumably in Danish). Torches will be provided, so just show up! Everyone is welcome. More info available on the FB event page here.
If you are interested in seeing a wild, completely untraditional Christmas tree that has been designed by architects, then tomorrow evening is your chance. Head to Utzon Center at 17:00 to see the tree unveiled in the Utzon courtyard – and bring the children! There will be a ‘mousetrap’ world championship (I have absolutely no idea what this actually entails – but would love to find out), prizes, and æbleskiver to participating children. Free entry for children under 18 years of age; normal entry rates apply to adults. Dinner on the Jørn from 18:00 if you book ahead here. More about this event here. Sounds quite cool…
Is there such a thing as German humor? Well, the Cannes Film Festival audience laughed at any rate, and tears rolled while critics assigned MY DAD TONI ERDMANN the highest star rating ever given at the festival. German career woman Ines (Sandra Hüller) works on an outsourcing project in Bucharest when her father shows up unannounced. Winfred (Peter Simonischek) would like to be in her life, but it is difficult to enter and in despair he clothes himself in a clumsy wig and false teeth, after which he begins to mingle – under the pseudonym Toni Erdmann – with her friends and business associates. Luckily there is meaning behind the madness, but you will have to come to Biffen at Nordkraft at 18:30 and see to find out what it is! Free false teeth will be distributed for the premiere. Once you have seen the movie, you will know why … Remember that Biffen gives student discounts to those with ID. More info here.
Academic Salon – Science & Cocktails. This is a new series of events at Studenterhuset, which is intended as a merger between TED Talks, science sludge and a conversation salon. The goal is concrete, meaningful conversation through knowledge dissemination. We will break with aloof debate, bridging the gap between attitudes and experiences. The events will take place in a casual setting at Studenterhuset, including drinks and making academia “social.” Each time someone will be invited to give a short academic paper on the target subject and then the audience will be invited to talk about the topic from a conversation menu composed from the presentations. Tomorrow the topic is ‘Co-creation – New citizenship or the welfare state’s death?’ Lars Skov Henriksen, Professor in the Department of Sociology and Social Work at AAU, has researched and followed developments in volunteering and social policy for a number of years. He will be the guest speaker. Please note this is in DANISH. From 19:00 to 21:00. Free entry. More info here.
You are officially invited by Intercambio to a night of fun with both pool and a quiz game, so please stop in at 19:00 with your crew and see what stuff you and your buddies are made of. If pool is not one of your key competencies, you are welcome to just grab some refreshments and hang around the pool tables. The tournament will be on a 2 vs. 2 basis, so grab a partner, pick a team name and get ready to rack em’ and if skill or just sheer luck is in your favour, you’ll be able to win a prize, so the stakes are high! The event will be held at Dan’s Pool Hall on Ved Stranden 13 (basically on Jomfru Ane Gade), so come and join the fun! More info here.
Saturday, 3 December
This Saturday from 15:00 to 18:00 the Danish Society for Nature Student Department in Aalborg invites you to their annual Christmas Swap Market at Studenterhuset! The Christmas Swap market will feature Christmas music, Christmas cheer and Christmas decorations for children – and of course, clothes, toys, things for the home or whatever else you need or have to spare – for free! Recycling is sustainable. So collect all your discarded stuff and come for a day when YOU can make a green difference. How does it work? You come with the functional stuff and the clothes you no longer use. Then set your stuff out on the tables, and take what others have brought that you can use. All surplus goes to local charity shops with charitable purposes. There will also be refreshments, cold and hot, from the cafe for a small fee. More info here.
