Aal around Aalborg: markets, wine and beer tastings, children’s treasure hunt, Nerfkraft, vinyl sale, Asian Business Fair, Toastmasters, and Latin dance
So…the October ‘monthly Aal around Aalborg post’ experiment was a spectacular failure. I did not update it much after the first or second week, and I missed informing you about several important activities happening around the city, including the Christmas lighting ceremony for Salling and a number of Halloween-related parties last weekend (mostly for adults). Not good. As a result, I am returning to the once-a-week format for the time being. And I’m ahead of schedule this week, posting on Tuesday rather than the normal Thursday or Friday. But who’s complaining? I will try to add to this as events are advertised…
Wednesday, 2 November

As part of the Aalborg Main Library KAMP forum, Jannie Fosvang from FOA and Tine Lund Jørgensen from the Anxiety Association will debate anxiety this evening – how it is to live with ever increasing pressure on one’s shoulders and what we might do to alleviate the widespread condition that anxiety has become. Up to 400,000 Danes suffer from various forms of anxiety and the numbers will only rise as performance requirements and the speed of the labor market accelerate. Anxiety costs the Danish society dearly in terms of sick leave, disability and lost productivity. What needs to be done to turn the tide of increasing anxiety? If this interests you and you understand Danish, please consider attending. 17:00-18:00 and free entry. More info here.
Nordkraft welcomes you again to BazaarKUL Vinyl Edition on Thursday from 19:00 to 22:00. The event brings together the city’s young vinyl enthusiasts by offering the opportunity to swap, buy and sell their old vinyl records. So out with the old boxes of vinyl records and in with the ‘new’! There will be a turntable available to check out potential new finds. The following rules apply: a maximum of 500 discs per stand; no companies allowed; stands allocated on a first come, first served basis by emailing email@example.com. Admission to the event is free. Do you want to become a confident public speaker in English? If so, Toastmasters is the group for you. Drop by Huset and look for the room ‘2eren/Grøn’ on Thursday at 18:45. You can come as a guest and just observe or take a more active role (if you want) – it’s your choice. So whether you are a first-timer or a long-established member, come and visit us, see what we’re doing, and, if you like it, join us! At this week’s meeting we will welcome a really special guest who has more than three years of experience as the president of Esbjerg Toastmasters. From November our weekly meetings will alternate between Wednesdays and Thursdays. This means we will have more opportunities to meet you!! More info here.
The Douro wine region is one of the most famous wine regions in Portugal. It is especially known for port, since all grapes used for port wine come from this area. Duoro Winebar invites you to an evening of wine tasting at which we will focus on the other quality wines that Douro has to offer. We will taste nine wines from the area – four whites and five reds. You can buy your ticket in the Douro Winebar at Danmarksgade 49. The event lasts from 19:00 to 21:00. See the FB page for more.
If wine isn’t your thing but you are in the Danmarksgade area, then consider Basement Beer Bar. Like last year, Basement Beer Bar is supporting the ‘Øj Day’ initiative on Thursday. What is this, you might ask? Basically, it is the day before the ‘thin Christmas beer’ is released at discothèques around the country, and it is marked by celebrations of the RIGHT Christmas beer’s great taste in beer bars and by beer enthusiasts in Denmark. Basement Beer Bar will put 10 Christmas beers on tap from 19:00. And it pays to be there on time because they will be raffling off 2 x tasting of all 10 Christmas beers (10 x 10cl) to those present! Tap list coming soon on the FB event page.
Friday, 4 November
You are cordially invited to the opening of the new art exhibition at VÆG. Artist Johnny Schmidt Erbs presents paintings + photos under the title ‘Rising Fall – 30 years after civilization has ended.’ Johnny Schmidt Erbs went on a journey inside the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and visited the abandoned ghost town of Pripyat 30 years after the nuclear disaster in northern Ukraine. Also featuring Josfine Kjær Arrild’s ceramics entitled ‘Play Ground – An exploration of materiality.’ Josefine Kjær Arrildt has also been on an exploration – inside the studio, playing with the power dynamic between the object and the plinth. Opening on Friday from 16:00 to 19:00. The exhibition is on view until December 3th, 2016. More info here.
Come and meet your (real) family when we hold another open and unpretentious ‘Friday bar’ for you and all those you might have something in common with at Cafe Ulla Terkelsen London in Vestbyen from 15:00 to 22:00. ‘Friday bar for enthusiasts’ is an open community of people who are passionate about making the world happier, wiser and smarter through our jobs, companies, or volunteer work. The purpose of our Friday bars is to create a space where people – regardless of individual interests and attitudes – can meet with like-minded people and talk about the things that most interest and motivate them. And through ‘hygge’ and conversations, we create new alliances and friendships that maintain the strong flame we have inside. There will be network facilitation, circle presentations and other activities. There will also be a short 20 minute presentation at 16:00, which will give us food for thought and stimulate conversation. Find out more and register here. The event is free of charge but attendees are presumably responsible for purchasing their own drinks and/or food.
It is a while before Christmas, but one can never start too early … especially when you are talking about mulled wine, æbleskiver, and Christmas beer. Dice’n Drinks will focus on the last of these Friday, when – for the first time – they will put some Christmas beers on tap. There will be both Julefnug and Øko Julefred on tap as well as Julestenøl in bottles. In honor of the occasion, they will sell a pint of Christmas beer, on tap or in a bottle, for just 25 kroner. They look forward to seeing you and welcoming Christmas beer a bit early! More info here. From noon on Friday until 2am on Saturday.
Saturday, 5 November
[Please note: the monthly food market that normally takes place the first Saturday of every month has been shifted to 12 November. It will NOT happen this Saturday.]
Would your children like to go on a treasure hunt? Then bring them to the Main Library from 10:00 to 12:00 Saturday to solve puzzles and find treasure. Save the Children Aalborg has created a treasure hunt for children from 5-12 years and there are plenty of good hiding places for treasures in the library. All children who participate will get a portion of the reward (composed of small candy bags, balloons and bookmarks). The treasure hunt is not difficult, but moms and dads are welcome to lend a hand. There are seven different items to be found (listen, smell, feel, drawing, movement). During the treasure hunt Save the Children Aalborg’s president will give a talk about Save the Children’s work and how we can work locally, nationally and internationally to end violence against children. No registration necessary; free entry. More info here.
A big indoor flea market will take place at BankoCenter Danmark, Lundeborgvej 1, 9220 Aalborg. Free entry and parking. Tables for rent for 100kr. Open both Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00.

Or if more alternative, funky, independent design is your thing, then consider attending FindersKeepers at Aalborg Spritten (Strandvejen 22, 9000 Aalborg) both Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. The market is a platform for over 100 upcoming designers and artists who wish to sell their art, fashion, ceramics, jewelry, furniture, accessories and more. FindersKeepers’ design department consists of handpicked designers and artists from all over Denmark, each with their unique expression and a way of accessing their designs. We always present various designers and artists, and the composition changes from event to event. In this way we ensure variation, so there is always something new for our customers. From the artists’ side, the market is an ideal platform for students of design education, new talents and upcoming designers who want to show their skills and get direct contact with the consumer. Cost of entry: 50kr/day or 70kr/weekend. Children under 12 years free of charge. There are several advantages to buying your ticket ahead of time: (1) You save money. Both day tickets and weekend tickets are 10kr cheaper when you buy in pre-sale (although with the fee that comes with buying online, you only actually save around 4kr). (2) You enter 15 minutes before everyone else, i.e. at 10:45. (3) The first 1000 guests who have purchased a ticket in presale get free magazines from Bo Bedre, Costume & Life. (4) We scan your ticket directly from the screen of your phone already in the queue when you are waiting. Day tickets can be used on either Saturday or Sunday. Buy your ticket ahead of time here. Also, please note that it is generally not possible to pay for items by credit card at the stands. However, artists have been encouraged to accept payments by MobilePay, so a good tip is to download this app to your smartphone. Just in case, please bring cash. See FB page here.

Funcenter presents NERFKRAFT in cooperation with Nordkraft Event. NERF wars in Nordkraft! We will transform Kedelhallen into a battle arena with covers, graffiti, and camouflage. There is room for 20 players/hour on the field, so find your NERF gun and come out and shoot your friends. We have lots of classic arrows as ammo for your gun, so do not bring your own ammo unless it is a gun that does not use arrows. If you don’t have any NERF weapons at home (come on! everyone has a NERF weapon at home, right?) you can rent one on location for 25 kr./hour. FunCenter employees will ensure proper conduct at the event, doing game setups with Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch and other types of games. We provide top security and provide safety glasses to all players. The price per person is 99 kr. for 60 minutes of playing time. When you buy your bracelet for the event you choose what time you want to play. Time slots start at 10:00 and end with the 14:00 to 15:00 slot. THIS EVENT IS FOR CHILDREN! Adults can participate only when accompanied by a child. Bracelets that have not been sold ahead of the event will be available on the day at the entrance. If you want to make sure to get a place, we recommend that you buy your bracelet today by contacting us at tel. 28 31 21 01 or firstname.lastname@example.org. More info here.
To celebrate World Vegan Day, which takes place 1st November, we decided to organize another “vegan & vegetarian gathering”. Like last time, it will take place at KUL Café in Nordkraft from 16:00 to 21:00. To make it more exciting, we have set a Halloween theme. What does that mean, concretely? Let’s bring dishes made of pumpkin! To motivate you, we have prepared a little competition. The best looking dish will get an award so get ready and feel free to be creative. At the beginning of the gathering, there will be a short presentation about a startup company Alle Carte, which shall be a big help for all vegans in the the close future (why? you have to wait for the answer on Sunday :P) What’s more, you can test your knowledge in a little fun quiz prepared by volunteers. Unfortunately, the number of participants will be limited (due to space), so make sure you sign up on time! You can sign up either by leaving a comment on the FB event page or sending us a message. We will keep you updated with more information about the time schedule, prizes and other info during the week.
