Aal around Aalborg: shopping, seafood, hotdogs, circus, ice cream, 90s music, LEGO workshop, nature, clown race, SD garden party, NERF wars, Frozen soundtrack played live, and more?
Now that the Carnival season is over, we can turn our attention to the myriad outdoor events, runs, flea markets, musical performances, and festivals that crowd the Aalborg summer season. With warm temperatures and a festive atmosphere outdoors, it’s hard to stay inside. There are quite a few things going on this weekend – why don’t you try a few?
Please note: the monthly food market at Nordkraft has been cancelled in June (i.e. this Saturday) and the rest of the summer due to lots of other events in North Jutland going on. The market will return in September.
Also – Sunday, 5 June is Grundlovsdag (‘Constitution Day’). Since it is Sunday, it is not normally a shopping day, but if you rely on supermarkets to be open on Sundays, beware – they will be closed. Do your grocery shopping Saturday so you can grill the next day!
Friday, 3 June
Tomorrow is Day & Night in Aalborg, the day when people come from kilometers away to walk the pedestrian streets of central Aalborg, check out sales, and enjoy the crowds and good weather. Most shops stay open until 22:00. Special deals are available and the urge to spend money is infectious. No better place and time to part with your well earned kroners (if you have a job, that is – I’m aware many of my readers wish they were employed.) But even if you don’t want to buy a thing, you can still come and soak up the atmosphere.
In connection with Day & Night Mortens Kro will offer a special seafood buffet accompanied by tunes spun by DJ Carsten Schmidt. Depending on the weather, it will be held at either Mølleplads or in the restaurant. Lobster, oysters, scallops, clams, salmon and cod are on the menu, along with various accompanying dishes – for the special price of 278kr. Expensive – but if you are a seafood fan, this is not such a bad deal, I imagine. (I’m not, so I don’t actually know…) FB page here.
Also in connection with Day & Night, Aalborg City hosts the Danish Hotdog Eating Championship at Gammeltorv in cooperation with Steff Houlberg. Hotdog stands will be open for business from 15:00 and you can buy a hotdog for only 10 kr. The program includes music, presentation of the finalists, and more – before the actual contest begins at 18:00. Proceeds from hotdog sales will go to sports schools for the disabled arranged by Aalborg’s Idrætsforeningen for Handicappede together with Dansk Handicap Idrætsforbund. If you can stomach watching grown men stuff as many hotdogs in their mouth as possible in 15 minutes, then come and cheer them on and get a delicious hot dog or ten Program and more information available here.
Do you need to have your laughter muscles tickled? Then you should set out to see a Zirkus Nemo performance in which Søren Østergaard and his group of talented artists perform for the residents of Aalborg under the tent at Fjordmarken. You’ll see new artists as well as all the great artists who have been touring Denmark for several years. You can count on Søren and his troupe for an evening of fun and laughs. At 19:30 on Friday and 16:00 Saturday. Ticket prices from 190kr. to 490kr. Find out more here.
Saturday, 4 June
Come to ‘Bazaar Øst’ at Trekanten Library and Culture House from 11:00 to 16:00. The event offers a flea market, culture and entertainment in lovely harmony. Lots of stalls and activities will be offered both inside and out – weather permitting. Get a bargain and eat excellent food. Drop by and bring the kids! The Bazaar is free of charge. More info here.
The World’s Biggest 90’s Party comes to Kildeparken from 11:00 Saturday. 2015 hit us all by storm; the event was sold out in Rødovre and Odense and attracted a record audience in Aarhus… now it’s Aalborg’s turn. With over 20 international artists from the 90s, a string of leading 90’s music DJs, and a full day of fun, we have done everything we could to create a fantastic day. The event is not cheap (min 449kr, with packages including perks available for more) but if you love the music from 2 decades ago, this could be just what you need on a sunny Saturday. See the FB page for a LOT of information that I just don’t have time to include here, including the line-up of musical performers and more details about entry tickets. (Ahah! This would explain why they haven’t disassembled the infrastructure set up for last Saturday’s Carnival party…)
Aalborg International Friends, an initiative run by a group of churches in Aalborg with an interest in supporting internationals, invites you to a barbecue party Saturday from 12:00 to 17:00 Østre Anlæg, 9000 Aalborg. Bring something to place on the grill, and something to share (salad, fruit, dessert, etc.). As summer begins let’s enjoy some time around the grill and meeting new and old friends! Click here for more info.
Aabybro Mejeri (Dairy) is holding Isens Dag (Ice Cream Day) from 13:00 to 16:00 and all are welcome. We look forward to seeing kids, adults, young, old, suppliers, customers and friends of the dairy for a few pleasant hours. You’ll be able to visit the dairy, Privaten Cafe, the shop, and antique cars, and, of course, taste our ice cream and meet the people behind our delicious products. The afternoon will be filled with music, contests and special offers. Free entry. See the FB page for more info.
Would you like to sell used things out of the back of your car this Saturday? Or buy the things others are offering? If so, come to Bagagerumsmarked Aalborg, which takes place every 2nd Sunday of the month from April to October plus 4 June, 6 August, and 3 September. The sale is from 9:00 to 15:00 and it takes place at Dyrskuepladsen, Hobrovej 437, Skalborg. More info here.
Sunday, 5 June
Utzon Center invites the youngest family members to a LEGO workshop Sunday morning. All pieces are white and the inspiration is a picture. The workshop gives children the opportunity to work with their creativity and imagination. Meanwhile, parents can enjoy a delicious brunch at Restaurant JØRN for 135 kr. One option for a family friendly morning in some of Aalborg’s most beautiful and inspiring surroundings. Oh – and a nice deal for Father’s Day! From 11:00-14:00. Price: DKK 25kr/child, 60kr/adult (free for members). More info here.
Wait – had you forgotten or (sharp intake of air) not REALIZED that it’s Father’s Day on Sunday? If so, you have the chance to invite him to Lille Vildmose where you can compete with him to see who is the greatest savage. If you are really good you might win a prize. This Sunday entry is free for all fathers. As always, there will be a campfire in the shelter where you can buy bread and sausages to roast over the fire. From 10:30 to 12:00. More info here.
Funcenter presents NERFKRAFT in cooperation with Nordkraft Event. NERF wars in Nordkraft! We will transform Kedelhallen into a battle arena with covers, graffiti, and camouflage. There is room for 20 players/hour on the field, so find your NERF gun and come out and shoot your friends. We have lots of classic arrows as ammo for your gun, so do not bring your own ammo unless it is a gun that does not use arrows. If you don’t have any NERF weapons at home (come on! everyone has a NERF weapon at home, right?) you can rent one on location for 25 kr./hour. FunCenter employees will ensure proper conduct at the event, doing game setups with Capture the Flag, Team Deathmatch and other types of games. We provide top security and provide safety glasses to all players. The price per person is 99 kr. for 60 minutes of playing time. When you buy your bracelet for the event you choose what time you want to play. Time slots start at 10:00 and end with the 14:00 to 15:00 slot. THIS EVENT IS FOR CHILDREN! Adults can participate only when accompanied by a child. Bracelets that have not been sold ahead of the event will be available on the day at the entrance. If you want to make sure to get a place, we recommend that you buy your bracelet today by contacting us at tel. 28 31 21 01 or firstname.lastname@example.org. More info here. What better way to spend Constitution Day?
The clown run is a family race during which participants can crawl, walk, roll, or run. It’s not about being the fastest; it’s about having a good time while supporting a good cause: Danish Hospital Clowns. Entry costs 60 kr., 48 kr. of which go directly to the hospital clowns’ visits to hospitals’ children ward; the rest goes to organization of the race. There will be medals and red clown noses for ALL participants. The race, which takes place from 10:00, starts from Mastrup Lakes, 9530 Støvring. Parking is available at Karensmindeskole. Take a picnic basket and have a really nice day with a lot of others and support a good cause! We will provide fruit and water for all participants and perhaps a little prize drawing. Registration can be done here. Pick up of starting numbers can be done on the day from 8:30. One lap is 2.5km but you can run as many laps as you want. For more information, click here or here.
Spend a pleasant day in the countryside around Gistrup where we will walk for a couple of hours and talk about the different flowers we encounter along the way. The skilled Hans Paarup Thomsen, who is, among other things a lecturer in botany at the university, will be our guide. The tour is for flowers geeks as well as those who just want to go for a walk in the beautiful surroundings and become a little wiser. We will meet at the “bus” by Sæderupvej – see attached map in the comments. The tour finishes, of course, with coffee and cake 🙂 All are welcome. You can find the map of the location and other info here. Organized by Danmarks Naturfredningsforenings Studenterafdeling i Aalborg.
And finally, nestled amongst the sports, nature, and NERF events, we find a true Constitution Day event. Per tradition the Prehn (Social Democratic party) family opens their garden to everyone on Constitution Day at Peder Paars Road 10 in Aalborg from 14:00 to 17:00. This is a good opportunity to hear sharp political speeches, enjoy the garden and coffee, cake and maybe a cold beer, and talk to a lot of nice and interesting people. Remember that Constitution Day is a celebration of democracy; therefore, we also need to make space on the shelf for diversity and views that are different to our own. This year you can hear speeches by former Defense Minister from the Liberal Party, Søren Gade, initiator of Venligboerne, Merete Bonde Pilgaard, Aalborg Mayor Thomas Kastrup-Larsen, DSU Aalborg’s president, Asbjørn Persson, and a group of young people from Aalborg Youth city council. It costs 40 kroner for anyone over 15 years to participate. Children under 15 are free. Please come and join us to celebrate democracy day with us! More info here.
Another pleasant experience on Sunday (although in no way related to the Constitution) could be watching Frozen at Musikkens Hus and hearing the Odense Symphony Orchestra play the soundtrack live. Tickets are 275kr/person + 20kr fee. Seats are extremely limited for both showings (11:00 and 15:00) so if you are interested I would suggest booking IMMEDIATELY. Click here for more info and a link to ticket sales. ATTENTION: This is the Danish-dubbed version of the movie – not English!!!!
