This weekend is a bit more balanced than last. Events spread out over today, tomorrow and Sunday (sorry about the delay on the ones happening at 15:00 today; I wanted to get this post uploaded last night but had to wait until now to do so…) Plus next Wednesday (for whatever reason.) The headliners, of course, are this evening’s international parade – the kick-off of Aalborg’s annual carnival festivities – and the children’s carnival parade and fun in Kildeparken on Saturday. Cooperation on the part of the weather is not guaranteed, but it looks pretty good.
Friday, 20 May

A comprehensive and unique art collection has come to Kunsten from the Centre Pompidou, Paris. Join us for the opening of the exhibition ‘Donation Florence & Daniel Guerlain,’ showing international contemporary art of the highest quality. The exhibition presents over 250 works from around the world. All are on paper. Some works are meters long, others quite small, and they all have as many different expressions as paper, as a medium, allows. The program begins at 15:00 and progresses as follows:
– Welcome by Kunsten’s director, Gitte Ørskou
– Address by Chief Inspector, drawing collection, Centre Pompidou, Per Jonas Storsve
– Talk by France’s Ambassador to Denmark, François Zimeray
– Glasses of Champagne Bruno Paillard served
Free admission for members of Club Art + Utzon. Other pay regular admission fees. More info here.
An alternative to Kunsten can be found in the form of Platform 4’s Tourist Bar, which also begins at 15:00. Here’s their spiel: Summer is for touring around. Come join our thematic tours around the globe this season in picturesque Karolinelund. We have drinks, music and summer activities. We start off in Brazil – with caipirinhas, bossa nova and football!’ Platform 4 is located in Karolinelund. Lots of interested expressed already. See the FB page here.
Yet another alternative to Tourist Bar is more art. But this time at VÆG Art Gallery. ‘You are cordially invited to the opening of the new show SECRETS & DRONES by Danish artist Mads Ljungdahl and Japanese artist Mariko Wada. Ljungdahl presents his project ‘DRONE OBSERVATION’. A series of minimalistic graphic black and white drones. What is a drone? A friendly humming bee or an mechanical enemy? Ljungdahl creates and challenges us with observations of relations between man, machine and nature. Wada is also an explorer – testing the expressive potential of ceramics. By using a variety of modeling techniques, Wada creates tactile and visual objects. ‘ANATOMY OF THE SECRET’ is a series of sculptural objects, where you as a viewer are challenged – what is underneath? Is it moving? From 16:oo to 19:00. The artists will be present. Free entry. The exhibition is on view until 25 June. More info here.
Come see the best carnival groups from Aalborg, Denmark and Europe! The international carnival parade starts at 18:00 at John F. Kennedy Square, travels down Boulevarden to Nytorv, where it turns righ, and ends up at Gabels Torv. From 20:00 to 22:00 there will be appearances at Gabels Torv. And evidently food stands from places like Ugood, Foodsquat, Fuego and Crazy Chips. Not to be missed (much nicer and more compelling than next Saturday’s madness)! Find out more here on the official Aalborg Karneval site.
To rival the international parade (as if…) is the first Friday Night Skate of the year, beginning at 19:00. Friday Night Skate is a social ride through the streets of Aalborg for all who can use roller skates or roller blades and enjoy skating together with others. Skaters are shielded from the rest of traffic by blockades. The ride is 15 kilometres in length at a moderate pace with a break at approximately the half-way point. Participation in the Friday Night Skate is free and requires no registration. Meet in front of the Elbjørn at Aalborg harbor on skates and be ready to roll! Read more here or here.
And yet another option: the first annual UCN’s Got Talent Final! Come and meet our gifted and extraordinary participants, who will provide you with a great show. UCN will provide some snacks and our Friday Bar will be open. An extra surprise will be a performance by our UCN ambassadors, who normally organize events for you but tomorrow will perform as well. Do you think they have talent? Let see… From 20:00 to 23:30 at UCN T&B International. More info on the FB page.
