Aal around Aalborg: photography exhibit, music from New Orleans, “Dancing Cows Day,” flea market, dress exchange shop birthday, OpenIDEO launch, and India Theme Night
Free time is at a premium these days. Having started my job nearly 2 weeks ago, I really feel the crunch when it comes to the few precious evening hours between the children going to bed and my head hitting the pillow. So I gave myself one hour tonight to see how far I could get with this post. It is abbreviated, in comparison to past editions of the post, but the most interesting events I could find are all there. I will think longer-term about how to handle the blog when I’ve had some time to take a long, deep breath…Have a good weekend! 🙂 And please don’t forget – flowland.dk has a slew of events listed on their website, divided into categories.
Friday, 15 April
Internationally-known Danish photographer Joachim Ladefoged, who recently was named ‘Photographer of the Year’ 2016 in Denmark, opens an exhibition of his work tomorrow at VÆG Gallery from 16:00 to 19:00. With “AFTER MY TIME,” Ladefoged goes on a journey back in time, back to his childhood, to all the places he has lived and from which he carries memories. A journey that taught him to look ahead by looking back. The exhibition is on view until May 14th 2016. Ladefoged will be present at the opening. See the FB page for more info.
Tomorrow from 21:00 New Orleans/based Quintron will perform at 1000Fryd, accompanied by Miss Pussycat. Tickets are 50kr+fee. The description of Quintron’s albums is ‘psychedelic soul of New Orleans garage R&B filtered through a tough distorted Hammond B-3 and a cache of self-made electronic instruments.’ Sounds fascinating – I have no clue what that means. Should be an interesting evening! More info here.
Platform4 is the stage for some talented musicians and DJs tomorrow from 22:00 to 3:00 the next morning. Switch is back after a successful debut event, this time digging into the depths of proper House music. And we’ve doubled up on the visual experience, to pull you further into our universe. Earlier last month ON/OFF released their debut EP on Chuggy Traxx called “Detroit”. Thumping a relentless House groove the EP’s title track has been remixed by none other than Greco. To get you ready for a night full of 303-synth is Rasmus Vels. Emerging as one of Aalborg’s most promising young DJs Rasmus is currently working on his first EP, expected to hit the market sometime this year. The residency this time is filled by TCHIKA, alongside Pupils, who will take you on a visual journey beyond imagination. Free entry. More info here.
Sunday, 17 April
This Sunday is ‘Øko Day’ in Denmark – the day on which cows raised on organic farms are let out to graze in the fields after a long winter in the barn. Everyone is invited to come and see ‘the cows dance’ with joy as they take in the fresh air, sun and taste of spring. More than 247,000 Danes pulled on rubber boots and visited the organic cows last year. Participating farms will offer tastings of organic dairy products and plenty of opportunities to see, hear, taste, touch and experience how they do things. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy a fun and educational experience on an organic farm, where you can ask questions and get answers from those who know organic farming the best – the farmers. The festivities officially start at 10:00 and end at 14:00 but cows are released from the barn at precisely 12:00; some farms, however, offer other opening hours – remember to check the farm’s website before you leave home and don’t forget your rubber boots and, for children, rain gear (we ran into trouble a couple of years ago when our daughter fell into a mud puddle almost up to her waist!). You can find the farms closest to Aalborg here, which is a page on the event’s general website.
From 11:00 to 16:00 there will be a flea market at Louise Plads in the center of Aalborg, near Boulevarden. Stalls can be purchased by anyone and everyone is more than welcome to come and browse and make wonderful discoveries. Come and find everything from cool vintage and retro cases to furniture and unique collections of modern appliances, clothes and trinkets. Prices are low so that everyone can participate. It costs 30 kr to buy a stand (1.5 x 2 meters). See more info about purchasing stands on the event page here (in Danish). If you cannot participate this Sunday, fear not – there will be held flea markets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month at Louise Plads from now to September!
Butik Gejst (Fyensgade 18) is celebrating their first birthday and you are invited to the party. There will be amazing offers, raffles and an evening event on Thursday evening. All week a dress exchange membership (not sure what this is, but it seems to be the essence of the store) will cost only 99 kr/month (normal price 129 kr. per month – three month minimum.) On Tuesday there will be free birthday cake for all who pass by. Thanks to all who have followed us on Facebook / Instagram, been past the store to enjoy coffee / cake, bought goodies for yourself or your home, found personal and special gifts and have supported the dress exchange concept. Because of you this is possible! More info here.
On Wednesday, 20 April OpenIDEO will hold its launch event in Aalborg at Startup Café from 17:00. OpenIDEO is a social innovation platform for social good. We are a global community that draws upon optimism, inspiration, ideas and opinions of everybody to create solutions to some of the world’s toughest challenges, as well as to the local ones. OpenIDEO Aalborg Chapter is a local community organized by local facilitators to benefit from face-to-face interaction. Chapters are for design thinking enthusiasts who want to make a difference in their community. We’ll start by following OpenIDEO’s model for enacting social change and decide where to go from there. It’s entirely up to us as a group on what we would like to focus. And we’d love for you to join us. Free entry – just show up! More info here.
Also on Wednesday, 20 April ‘3om1’ invites you and your friends to a special “Indian Theme” evening from 18:00 at Studenterhuset. You will experience the colorful Indian culture that you have always dreamed of in small cold Denmark. Indian Theme Night is for those who would like to experience the fascinating and creative Indian entertainment in the form of dance, music, and other festive surprises. During the evening, the bar will serve drinks at affordable prices as well as Indian snacks and food. You get all of this for 50 kr., which goes toward supporting our work with India’s poor children who cannot afford an education. On the occasion of this event, you also have the opportunity to make a difference by choosing to support your very OWN child in India along with 1-2 other friends or even yourself by becoming a sponsor. Help give a child a better future! If you are already sponsoring a child through 3om1 the event is completely FREE for you. More info here.
