Aal around Aalborg: Northern Winter Beat, LEGO events, games galore, music, Villads fra Valby at library, volunteer meeting, shows at AKKC and Gigantium, art exhibits, and more!
It’s been quite a week, what with the Danish Parliament’s passage of the controversial bill concerning immigration and refuge in Denmark (see my updated post on this), the landscape turning from white to green, a new font for my blog (an observant reader alerted me to the fact that the old one was hard to read on some screens so I changed it), and Denmark topping the Transparency International’s list of least corrupt countries – yet again (see my blog’s FB page for that one – 3rd item down at the moment)…In case those things are not keeping you occupied or distracted, here is a smattering of exciting events and activities to delve into this weekend and beyond.
Friday, 29 January
I covered this briefly last week, but Northern Winter Beat has hit Aalborg and is giving you a LOT of opportunities to listen to diverse music groups around the city – including at the train station! A one-day ticket for today costs 165kr., while for tomorrow, Saturday, it is 295kr. So it’s not cheap but as this is mainly a student-oriented event, I imagine the price was carefully decided. In other words, it should be worth it. See the FB page for an easy to follow list of who plays where and when; here is the official website. Happy listening!
If you are the type who enjoys building with LEGOs AND having a cold beer at the same time, then show up at Utzon Center from 15:30, pay 60 kr. and build to your heart’s content! Prize for the best looking building. Beer – 15kr/bottle; wine – 100kr/bottle.
Dice ‘n Drinks is the latest games cafe to open in Aalborg – and it happens today at noon! Stop by to see the new space at Sankelmarksgade 15 (off Vesterbro). There will be, among other things, half-price offers on season passes during this entire opening weekend. There will also be significantly reduced prices on drinks. Interested? Click here for more info.
Lowpass TV 018: Aalborg edition music event at Platform 4 – see Flowland.dk’s international events page for more info.
Saturday, 30 January
Aalborg Brætspilscafé hosts a Game of Thrones Winterkit tournament from 12:00. I honestly have no idea whether you need to be able to speak Danish to participate – the instructions on their FB page are in Danish, so that leads me to think you do. But hey! Maybe that’s not a problem for you, or maybe language is not a significant barrier to playing the game. Anyway, see the event page for more.
‘Meet the author’ event at Aalborg Main Library for children from 12:30 to 13:30. Anne Sofie Hammer, who wrote Villads fra Valby (maybe your child has seen it at Aalborg Theater this week?), will read from her book, sign autographs, and talk about Villads. You can also have your photo taken with the Villads character at the library (cut-out version), and enter a drawing contest. Free and no registration required. Click here for more. Oh – and this will be proceeded by a Suzuki-method violin performance by students of Aalborg Kulturskole at 11:00.
European Youth North Denmark hosts the first session of The European Film Club tomorrow from 13:00 to 15:00 at International House North Denmark. This club is a new initiative to support creativity among those interested in the art of film making. There will be get togethers at least 1-2 times pr month for networking, inputs, focus on different attractive topics, film workshops, story sharing, and the building up of a European film community. Check out the detailed program by going to the FB event page. As far as I know it is open to everyone – not just students.
DGI International Gym Show from 19:30 to 21:30 at Gigantium tonight. Must be a big deal because it costs 315kr. But if any of you are gymnastics aficionados, this could be the event for you! More info on Flowland.dk’s site here, including link to tickets.
The Simon & Garfunkel Story at Aalborg Kongress & Kultur Center at 20:00 for 260kr./ticket. I think it is in English. Includes lots of the duo’s most popular tunes. More info here on Flowland.dk.
Another music event at Platform 4 – see Flowland.dk’s international events page for more info.
Sunday, 31 January
Ceramics artist Nina Lund will open her exhibition at Huset from 11:00. Entry is free. Lund is known for her participation in DR1’s ‘Made in Denmark’ show in 2015. The exhibition runs through 17 February. See Huset’s page for more info.
What does the future look like? And how will the city develop? This is the subject of the first of a series of Sunday LEGO workshops at Utzon Center. Children of all ages can participate! The workshops take place the first and last Sundays of each month at 11:00. Price: Children free, adults pay the normal entry fee. Members of KUNSTEN + Utzon Center Club get free admission. More info here.
Monday, 1 February
Red Barnet Aalborg (Save the Children) will hold an intro evening for people who are interested in becoming a volunteer for the organisation. The meeting takes place from 19:00 to 20:00 at Huset, and drinks and good humour will be served. The program includes:
– Introduction of Save the Children
– Description of the local association and its policies/rules
– Team description: clubs, fundraising

Tuesday, 2 February
Photographer Cathrine Ertmann brings a new dimension to Utzon Center’s exhibition ‘GROWTH – Grow and Build the Future Together’ with her thought-provoking and melancholy photos. With ‘Land Outside’ Cathrine Ertmann captures with her camera obscura forgotten stories and stirs curiosity about the life that is lived in abandoned houses. She shows us that we might overlook the potential of the aesthetic of decay and that many stories are tied to old abandoned houses. Welcome by Exhibition Manager Lasse Andersson at 17:00 and opening speech, followed by performance by
singer and songwriter Niels Hausgaard, from 17:10. There will be wine / water / snacks. Free admission for members of KUNSTEN + Utzon; normal entry price for all others. More info here.
Interested in learning Tango? Then show up to Kulturbroen Nørresundby from 19:30 to get a low-down on the basics. You must sign up with a dance partner, and you must be a paying member of Tango Aalborg to attend classes. In return for membership, you get free access to drop-in on Sundays and a reduced price to our events. See all Tango Aalborg’s offers here. The FB page is here.
