Aal around Aalborg: music and art dominate this weekend (plus some meetings next week and a budget run and Book Chat)

Posted on Updated on

The cold has sucked some of the joy out of being outdoors. I imagine that if you are like me, you are tolerating the temperatures – but just barely; this is a wet cold, not a dry one, so it feels even more frigid than it actually is. And the continued slickness of the streets has reduced my bicycle riding to mere starts and stops; more often than not I find myself pushing my bike over ice and slush, which wreaks havoc with my daily routine – especially delivering and picking up my children to and from school/børnehaven.

Enough moaning about the weather. This weekend the number of activities and events has blossomed to a respectable list. See below – you’ll surely find something you like and that is interesting enough to get you out and about! Pay special attention to all the art offers on Saturday as well as the international sing-a-long at the Main Library for families. Oh – and Flowland.dk has two interesting cinema options coming up at 1000Fryd listed on their site – Sunday, 24 January and Wednesday, 27 January. Check them out here.

Friday, 22 January

Free ice hockey match at Gigantium

Aalborg Pirates vs the Odense Bulldogs. Show up and free tickets go on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 19:00. (I don’t know how popular this will be so if you’re really keen, you might want to show up early.)

Youth Music Festival at Aalborg Kongress & Kultur Center

Ungdomsringens Musikfestival will once again hold Denmark’s largest and coolest Youth Music Festival – this weekend FOR FREE. Come and get your groove on with punk, rock, rap, and unplugged – 19 hours of non-stop music on 10 stages. Some 200 bands from all over the country, and several foreign youth bands, will perform. Doors open this evening at 18:00, and the festival ends at 23:30 tomorrow evening, Saturday, 23 January. See the FB page for (a bit) more information. Who knows? Maybe the next Beatles, or at least Coldplay, is among them!

Two additional music events

From 22:00 tonight until 2:00 tomorrow morning Studenterhuset hosts Garage a Go-Go! A garage rock’n’roll club with loads of dynamite hits. Resident DJ’s The Courettes will be spinning their favourite beat, garage, nothern soul & r’n’r singles. Free admission; inexpensive (compared to other places) drinks. And from 23:00 tonight until 5:00 tomorrow morning Vesterå-V4 will hold host two guest DJs – Defiant and Tchika – with support from resident DJ Kornum. Free admission there, too. Plus a happy hour from 22:00 to 1:00 (or all night/morning with student ID). More info here.
