Aal around Aalborg: more christmas markets, book sale, Black Friday, bake sale, music, art, climate march, flea markets, the list goes on

Posted on Updated on

Well the cold winds have made their appearance. Winter has hit Aalborg, even if the snow missed us last weekend :(. Christmas markets continue to dominate the calendar, but there is a plethora of other activities to take part in and enjoy. Here are some of your choices…

Aalborg Main Library is hosting a 3-day book sale (26-28 November) on their premises from today through Saturday. It actually started at noon  today and there was a line out the door. There is a meeting about Aalborg Sustainability Festival 2016 tomorrow, 27 November from 8:30-9:30 (yes – in the morning). Sorry for the late notice. If you are interested in learning more and getting involved, show up at Studenterhuset and join in. Elsk Aalborg, CO2 light, and FlexEnergi will be present to talk about this year’s event. For more info see the FB page here.

In diametric opposition to the aim of the sustainability festival is an event that hits Aalborg tomorrow called Black Friday, a day when shops are open and beckon those who wish to whittle down their gift lists and get some good deals while they’re at it. From 10:00 to 22:00 most shops in the city center will welcome shoppers, offering discounts and gimmicks to attract them. In City Syd, however, Aalborg Storcenter opens at 6:00 (yes, that’s right – in the morning) and doesn’t close until midnight. Other stores will have similarly crazy opening hours (Bauhaus, for example, from 9:00 to 23:00), making it possible for those who actually have to work during the day to shop BEFORE OR AFTER they go to the office.

Just to clarify what this madness is about: in the US Black Friday is always the day after Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of November each year. It is not called ‘Black Friday’ to remind one of the plague or evil or…rather, its origin dates back to 1966 when in Philadelphia an article appeared in The American Philatelist that highlighted the masses of pedestrians and heavy traffic that resulted from eager Christmas shoppers the day after Turkey Day (as Thanksgiving is fondly called by many). However, most people believe the name stems from the idea that stores whose revenues hang in the balance from January to November hope to go ‘into the black’ or tip from operating at a loss to making a profit based on their sales that day.

In any case, there are, indeed, many deals to be had in Danish stores tomorrow. So if you don’t mind braving the crowds and the lines, then go ahead – have a blast! More info on VisitAalborg here.

bakesaleThis Saturday, 28 November from 11:00 to 15:00 WORLD! – an international women’s organisation in Aalborg (of which this blogger is a member) – will have a table at Nytorv (between Spar Nord and Joe & the Juice) full of cakes baked by our members from all over the world. Each piece will be available for 20kr! Payment can be made by cash or MobilePay.

All proceeds will go toward buying breakfast for refugee children on Samos, Greece, where one of WORLD!’s members, Anna Klitgaard (http://cosmojournalism.com/), has volunteered the last few weeks. Her friend Bettina Espersen, who lives on Samos, and her organisation Venligboerne/Friendly Humans Samos (https://www.facebook.com/SamosAidNow/) have been working hard to supply breakfast to as many refugee children as possible each and every day, but their funds are limited.

Please come and buy a piece of homemade cake – one piece buys breakfast for 3 children!

art&resistanceThe ‘Art & Resistance Festival: art as a tool for change’ takes place on Saturday, 28 November from 14:00 until well into the night at Platform4. The festival will be an afternoon and evening event with a focus on art as a tool to create a change, spreading messages and creating networks. Art can help to give a voice to those who have no influence in the society – whether it’s graffiti artists in Egypt, rap-musicians in Denmark or poets. At the festival you will be inspired to spread the message through art, creating networks, and learning about popular movements that use art in the struggle for a better world – and defeating censorship, dictatorship and war. During the afternoon there will be an opportunity to participate in various workshops and hear presentations. The day ends with international cuisine, concert, and an after-party. Completely free to attend and participate. Lots more details available in English and Danish here.
