Aal around Aalborg: Julemand arrives, Christmas markets begin, MovemBAR, IværkStærk, knitting café, UCN International Day, music, and football

Posted on Updated on

It is that time of year again. Aalborg is set to launch itself into the Advent season, which officially begins the weekend of 28-29 November. But, lo and behold, the Christmas decorations were put up several weeks ago! The Julemand arrives this weekend to light the tall tree at Nytorv, and the Gammel Torv Christmas market starts tomorrow. There are small Christmas markets galore over the next several weekends, and they start Saturday. Below is an overview of events over the next week. Bonus tip this week: flowland.dk has just launched their website, which boasts ‘all events in Aalborg in one place.’ It’s in Danish, but it seems to have quite a lot of items. Check it out!

movembarIf you are quite confident in your ability to understand Danish humour – in  Danish – then you might be interested in tomorrow’s (Friday, 20 November) ‘MovemBAR’ event at Nordkraft from 15:00 to 18:00. Mixing a ‘Friday bar’ with Danish comedy acts – plus some music – the event organisers hope to raise a lot of money for the Movember Foundation, which provides funding for research on prostate cancer. Click here for the FB page. Entry is free – beers are not.

Strik og Stil – a yarn/knitting shop in Vestbyen – holds its weekly cozy knitting/crocheting cafe tomorrow, Friday, 20 November from 16:00 to 18:00. They provide coffee / tea; you bring your yarn and needles and work on your knitting / crocheting. Bonus: you can get expert guidance on your project if you are stuck, in doubt, need inspiration, or just want to get started. Find out more here.

intldayUCN International Day event takes place tomorrow, 20 November from 17:00 to 21:00 at UCN T&B International. It appears to be a competition between country representatives who form teams and have to present their countries in the best and most creative way possible. All for an audience. Entry is free – I am guessing that it is quite entertaining, not to mention educational. Check out the FB page for more info.

At 15:30 he will light the big Christmas tree at Nytorv. The Christmas Market opens the evening before, Friday, 20 November. However, you can discuss your ideas in English with those who will be there to help. See the more detailed schedule here. A sandwich lunch and coffee and tea will be included at no charge but registration required here.

Thanks for the update on all the upcoming Christmas fun! My husband is protesting starting Christmas before Thanksgiving, but I know we’re both looking forward to our second year of seeing the tree lighting ceremony and attending the Kloster’s julemarked.
