Aal around Aalborg: Aalborg Sustainability Festival winding down, ASO to inspire tonight, other musical events and more to come soon!
When a cold sends you home at 13:00 and straight to bed, even the best laid plans must be put on hold. Such was my situation last Friday, when, with the best of intentions, I was planning out how to get ‘Aal around Aalborg’ written, but my body had other ideas. Needless to say, I never got around to writing my weekly event post last week. And that’s a shame because a very important week-long event is taking place this week: the annual Aalborg Sustainability Festival (Aalborg Bæredygtighedsfestival.) It started last Saturday and will be over this Saturday, so most related events have already taken place; however, there are a few happening in the next couple of days (check them out in ‘highlights.’) Events Calendar has been updated as of Saturday morning.
Friday Bar at Utzon Center tomorrow, Friday, 18 September from 15:00 to 17:00. In connection with their recycling-focused Out To Sea exhibit, Utzon Center welcomes blogger Gitte Marie Johansen, who was nominated for this year’s Sustainability Award. At 15:15 in the Utzon Cafe Gitte Marie will talk about her “zero waste” lifestyle and how she recycles plastic waste, among other things. See the FB page for more information. Special prices on beer and soda for students with ID.
The Green Aalborger event will take place tomorrow, Friday, 18 September from 15:00 to 19:00. How can we make Aalborg a more sustainabilty-focused city? Meet a wide range of experts on ‘becoming green’ and bring your ideas on how together we can make it easy to be sustainable in Aalborg. We will also award the Aalborg Sustainability Price 2015 to an individual who has made an extraordinary effort to focus on sustainability. See the program (all talks and workshops in Danish, from what I can tell). Dinner is included for the very low price of 50kr (pay at the door in cash) but you have to register ahead for the event here in order to be on the list to be fed. 🙂
Do you love meeting new people from different cultures? Do you like barbecue, fun, spas and really good music? Would you like to hear North Jutland’s own Allan Olsen play “We Want One Denmark”? Then come and join us for ‘Mød Verden’ (Meet the World)! We invite you to a pleasant and exciting multicultural one-day mini festival in Karolinelund on Saturday, September 19 from 2pm to 7pm! During the day there will be various activities for children, young people, and their parents, and there will be different music from all parts of the world on stage.
The event takes place in connection with Aalborg Sustainability Festival and the concept is that people from different cultures come together on equal footing with one another to achieve a better understanding of each other’s cultures and living conditions. We have invited a number of people from different cultures (including refugees / asylum seekers), and together with we will create an absolutely perfect day. You will also have the opportunity to hear thought-provoking stories and ask the refugees as many questions as you like – and they will be happy to answer to the extent that they can.
When evening approaches, we will light up the grills, and everyone will have the opportunity to cook their own food. It would be nice if it became a potluck, and everyone shared food with one another. All are welcome – regardless of skin color, nationality, religion, income or age! Price: Free (but bring food for the grill) Here is the FB page.
Also tonight is what friends who play with ASO are calling one of the best concerts they will play this season: Francoix Leleux, who is guesting the orchestra this week as soloist-conductor-inspirer, has managed to infect the musicians with his daring, dazzling, exiting, generous, joyful and truly heartfelt music making. They say that it’s contagious. If you want to get infected too, come to the concert tonight, 17 September at 19:30. The program includes pieces by Mozart, Haydn, Schubert and Faure. And a special note for students: don’t forget that with ID you can get a seat for only 50 kr.! This has to be one of the best deals in town. World-class music for the price of a small margherita pizza. You CANNOT go wrong. Find out more on the ASO website here.

There is a new urban renewal project in Aalborg called Ny Nørregade, whose mission it is to develop what has been dubbed by some – most unfortunately – the ‘appendix’ of the pedestrian shopping zone in central Aalborg. On Sunday, they will have a ‘paint the pergola’ event from 9:00. If you don’t know where this is, it is where the end of the pedestrian street meets Løkkegade. Students of ‘AAU Architecture and Design’ faculty have organized the event and it could be quite fun – even for children. So come by to show your support – even if you don’t fancy painting!
Every year on the 3rd Sunday of September, farms in Denmark open their stable and barn doors to visitors to see how they operate. This year Open Farms Day takes place on from 10:00 to 16:00. Registration is not necessary and entry to all participating farms is free. There are many different types of farming represented, with everything from dairy cows to sows and piglets and from minks to eggs, mushrooms and cucumbers. At some of the farms it is possible to buy something to drink and eat – read more on the activity list for each farm. Find the farm/s you would most like to visit here.
