As sports announcers always say as the race horses near the finishing line, ‘we’re heading into the final stretch.’ The school year ends on 26 June, which means only two more weeks of making ‘madpakker,’ getting our daughter to school, and picking her up from SFO. The weather is slowly shifting, too, into summer mode and so we naturally want to spend more time outdoors. Luckily, there are a lot of events and activities on offer in Aalborg during the coming week that can tempt one outside. Sneak preview: next weekend (19-20 June) the 3rd annual Asian Food Festival and the first Aalborg Pride parade take place, so don’t take off for the summer – yet! Events Calendar has been updated.

New Toastmasters group’s second meeting – clear your throat and start speaking!

Do you want to be more confident and skilled at making public presentations? Do you want to be more competent at conducting effective meetings? Do you want to take your leadership to the next level? Are you up to an exciting evening full of interesting stories and great speeches? We have the pleasure of inviting you to the second Aalborg Toastmasters meeting at Studenterhuset today, Thursday, 11 June at 18:30. An agenda for the meeting can be found here. We will start right on time so make sure to be there a bit early.

Toastmasters Clubs help you to lose your fear of public speaking, develop your presentation skills, improve your meeting skills, and prepare you to be a more successful leader in your chosen path. So if you are interested in personal development, come and see what happens, even if you do not want to take an active role. An audience is more than welcome at our Toastmasters events and this is a FREE event. Please note that these events are in English and open to everyone interested in personal development and strengthening their communication skills – NOT just students. However, only full membership gives you full benefits, including opportunities to practice your prepared speeches, take particular roles in the meetings, hone your leadership skills, take part in the contests, and receive all educational materials (competent communicator and competent leadership manuals.) So if you are thinking about joining but are not yet a member, come and have a look to help you make a decision!

A map as well as a detailed program, including types of yoga, times, instructors, and language of instruction (Danish or English), are available on this page. The whole event is free of charge and takes place in the pavilion. We hope as many will join as did last year! Thanks, the Karma Yoga Festival of the North in Aalborg. Namaste.

Danish Hotdog Eating Championship tomorrow afternoon at Gabels Torvhotdogs

Gabels Torv seems to be the hot location in Aalborg this weekend (see below for more.) Tomorrow, Friday, 12 June, Aalborg City hosts the Danish Hotdog Eating Championship there in cooperation with Steff Houlberg. Preliminary rounds leading to this momentous occasion were held throughout the month of May at 42 different Steff’s locations in Denmark. A record number of people attended and chomped down a LOT of hot dogs; now the 10 finalists are ready for the grand finale – and you can come watch! Four hotdog stands will be open for business from 14:00 and you can buy a hotdog for only 10 kr. The program includes music, presentation of the finalists, and more – before the actual contest begins at 17:30. Proceeds from hotdog sales will go to Cafe parasol / Homeless Aalborg – so you can eat in good conscience 🙂 The reigning champion in Hotdog Eating, Ruben Mikkelsen, ate 34 hotdogs in 30 minutes during the 2014 final round and is ready to defend his championship. However, the rules have been adjusted since last year – contestants have only 15 minutes to down as many sausages as they can. Come and cheer them on and get a delicious hot dog or ten 🙂 More information available here.

BrewDog to visit Basement Beer Bar with some of their brews next Monday

On Monday, 15 June at 19:00 we will be graced by the presence of none other than BrewDog!! Victoria is a representative of the brewery’s Scandinavian arm, and will be dropping by Basement Beer Bar to present you some of their delicious beers. BrewDog is one of the most famous micro breweries in the world. They have undergone a major transformation in recent years, and with their recent capital increase on the way, it becomes progressively difficult to call them micro. They are in the process of re-widening their range of beers in Denmark, and have selected only 4 bars in the country to help them reach their target audience; Basement Beer Bar is one of them :-). Since it’s “summer” (on paper), the lighter beers from their range will be put on tap on Monday. Check out the FB event page for the beers’ names.

noah'sarkNoah’s Ark to be docked in Aalborg harbor for six weeks

Noah’s Ark, the first floating museum ship in Europe with biblical stories, is 70 meters long, 13 meters high and 10 meters wide. According to promoters (I think they’re Dutch): ‘The boat is a big secret, just like the real Noah’s Ark was in his time. Seen from the outside it is a huge wooden ship that mysteriously operates on the water of life. The trees that Noah’s Ark was built with protect life, just as the mighty tree of life, which with its 12 meters in height grows through the ship, and hidden from the outside world bears the secret of eternal life. To discover it along with Noah and the many Bible stories that the ship hides, you must embark with open eyes and open heart. Welcome to Noah’s Ark!’

It will be docked in front of Utzon Center through mid-July. Opening times – Mon-Sun from 9:00 to 18:00, although it also seems you can visit from 20:00 to 22:00 with a flashlight. Price of entry is not cheap (140 kr./adult and 90 kr./child, with family discount ticket available) but maybe worth it? I haven’t seen the boat myself but it’s only been here a day. Hmmm….For more info visit the website.

News item – No more smoking under open skies

First, cigarettes were banished from bars and restaurants. Now it seems that there will be no more smoking when visiting municipal parks. The Friluftsbadet in Aalborg is the first smoke-free park in Aalborg Municipality. It is not, however, impossible to light a cigarette at the outdoor pool. There is a “smoking shed” at the entrance to the park, and people use it as a place to smoke before entering. Aalborg continues with its plans to do away with smoking in even more public places. (Thanks to Midt-Vest Avis, 10 June 2015, pg. 84.)
