Recent & upcoming: Pervert Park showing, Flying Superkids, Toastmasters, skating, Limfjord nature event, Child’s Day Fair, animal shelter birthday, bonzais, and music, music, music
As I watch the dark clouds race across the sky this afternoon, I can only hope that Danish meteorologists are correct when they say summer is on its way next week. Not only would warmer, sunnier weather improve my mood, some of the events below could use a bit of sunshine to coax more people to attend! Plus, all this rain can’t possibly be good for all the political posters that have been put up around the city since yesterday, right? Speaking of which, I’ve asked a Danish friend of mine, who is a journalist and expert on explaining the Danish political system succinctly and clearly, to write a guest post on an overview of the Danish political spectrum and what is at stake in the next election. She has accepted, so that post will appear in the next couple of weeks. I’m also working on a post about fracking in North Jutland and two additions to my ‘immigrant entrepreneur’ series. Lots coming up before summer holidays! The Events Calendar is updated as of Thursday night, 28 May. I will add a couple of events happening next week by the end of this weekend…
Showing of documentary Pervert Park this evening at Aalborg Main Library
In cooperation with DR2 Dokumania Derude, Aalborg libraries will show a provocative documentary – “Pervert Park” – in the main library’s cinema tonight, Thursday, 28 May from 17:00 to 19:00. After the film, Kim Hvidberg from the local Aalborg branch of Landsforening SPOR and Line Larsen from Save the Children’s local Aalborg chapter will talk about their organizations. There will also be an opportunity to discuss the film. About Pervert Park: Florida Justice Transitions looks like any other American trailer park. The only evidence that the residents have been convicted of sexual offenses against children or minors are discrete anklets and sporadic vandalism First time directors Frida & Lasse Barkfors take us behind the stigmatization’s invisible fence, lending a human face to an ostracized community of demonized sex offenders – and force us to consider a moral dilemma that is deeper and more complex than one might want to acknowledge. The event is free of charge and the movie is in English.
[Disclaimer: For the first time as a blogger, I was offered free tickets in exchange for publicity of an event, which I accepted.] Yesterday evening my older daughter and I attended the first of several shows at Fjordmarken in Aalborg by the’Flying Superkids,’ a popular dance/gymnastics performance group from Århus. It is not something that would have appeared on my radar if I didn’t have children but I actually found it an enjoyable experience – and would have even if I had not been accompanied by my daughter. The 20-30 performers danced, hopped, flipped, twirled, sang, and smiled through act after act, from complex jump rope routines to jaw-dropping trampoline acts that involved very precise timing. The tent was full, the audience enthusiastic, and the performers clearly in love with what they were doing. The troupe will perform in Aalborg tonight, Thursday, 28 May at 18:30, Saturday, 30 May at 16:00 and Sunday, 31 May at 11:00. At last night’s show the MC said there were still tickets available (180 kr/person) but I just looked at the website and it seems that’s true only of tonight’s show: both Saturday and Sunday performances are sold out with only a waiting list. If you’re interested in buying tickets or getting on the waiting list, click here . It’s really quite a show – and the children in the audience absolutely loved it. My daughter started crying when I told her, as we left the tent, that we couldn’t come back this week… [Seating tips: there is a lot of space right in front of the stage for children. If you choose the bleachers, try to get a seat in the middle section so the metal supports for the tent don’t obstruct your view.]
Toastmasters group starting up in Aalborg – clear your throat and start speaking!
Do you want to be more confident and skilled at making public presentations? Do you want to be more competent at conducting effective meetings? Do you want to take your leadership to the next level? Are you up to an exciting evening full of interesting stories and great speeches? We have the pleasure of inviting you to the first Aalborg Toastmasters meeting at Studenterhuset on Friday, 29 May at 18:30. We will start right on time so make sure to be there a bit early. Toastmasters Clubs help you to lose your fear of public speaking, develop your presentation skills, improve your meeting skills, and prepare you to be a more successful leader in your chosen path. So if you are interested in personal development, come and see what happens, even if you do not want to take an active role. An audience is more than welcome at our Toastmasters events and this is a FREE event. If you want to join us during the first meeting, we would appreciate if you drop us an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or fill in the registration form. These events are in English and are open to everyone interested in personal development and strengthening their communication skills – NOT just students.
Tomorrow, Friday, 29 May, is the first Friday Night Skate of the season in Aalborg. Friday Night Skate is a social ride through the streets of Aalborg for all who can use roller skates or roller blades and enjoy skating together with others. Skaters are shielded from the rest of traffic by blockades. The route is 12-15 kilometers at a moderate pace with a break at approximately the half-way point. Participation in the Friday Night Skate is free and requires no registration. Meet in front of the concrete football ‘field’ at Aalborg harbor on skates and be ready to roll! Read more here. There will be three more – in June, July, and August – and I will put them on the Events Calendar.
Summer is almost here (no, really!) and you and your whole family are invited to join the Danish Society for Nature Conservation’s Student Committee in Aalborg on a Limfjord trip this Saturday, 30 May. The day will feature exciting experiences and knowledge of what lives under the surface of the fjord. Come and learn about clams, sand worms, crabs and other underwater creatures. DN’s skilled volunteers will tell participants about all the animals and plants we find. Afterwards there will be samples from the fjord. Please bring rubber boots and possibly a net. Also, don’t forget weather appropriate clothing! We will meet in the square, “horseshoe” near the Øster Uttrup at 13:00 (I’m not exactly sure where that is – I hope you can find it!). The event is free of charge and open to the public. More info here.

In case you are closer to Aalborg Øst than the fjord this Saturday, 30 May from 19:00 to midnight, why not stop by Trekanten for a similar experience, albeit indoors? The event takes place just opposite the culture center’s new cafe extension at Astrupstien. Rap with, among others, Samuel Kanu & Maximilian Andersen, who form the group Ownrs Label. Meet Kasper Gordon, also known as Kazpa G., rapper Phillip Andersen, and DJ Rasmus Kjærsgaard, who will keep the discs running and the mood up. Grafitti artist Date will come armed with plenty of spray paint cans, so we can paint graffiti – not on neighborhood walls, but on sheets. Feel free to bring your skateboard – there will be a ramp so you can show what you can do. The event is FREE, with the opportunity to purchase food and drink on site. Here is a link to more info.
Music, music and more music at both Platform 4 and 1000Fryd Saturday night
As if there weren’t enough opportunities to hear music Saturday, 30 May in Aalborg, here are two more: performances by three bands (The Roosters, Snare Drum and Violent Video) at Platform 4 from 20:00 (tickets 40 kr./person) – click here for more info – and a list of DJs for Groovebox #6 at 1000Fryd, also from 20:00 – for free. See this FB page for more info on the latter. Enjoy!
More music at Musikkens Hus – next week!
Two musical experiences will be held at Musikkens Hus next week – both quite different from all that is happening Saturday, and also different from one another. The first, Music in the Dark, takes place twice – on Monday, 1 June and Tuesday, 2 June at 20:00 in the venue’s Klassisk Sal. As stated on the FB event page (but translated): In total enveloping darkness songs of love will be played. That that is, was, and never was. (How’s that for cryptic?) Meet us in the dark, forget yourself for a moment, and feel the music. Free admission. No guarantees of a seat either night as there are no tickets. Show up early!
The second is Marianna & Marimbas, a concert with the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra featuring Marianna Bednarska, who, despite her young age, has won numerous first prizes in international competitions. Next Thursday night, 4 June she will play Anders Koppel 4th Marimba Concerto. Accompanied by the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Henrik Vagn Christensen, she will also demonstrate the beauty of the marimba through beautiful film music, including the scores of the Oscar-winning original Robin Hood movie from 1938, Shostakovich’s music for the film The Gadfly (1955), and the Raiders March by composer John Williams, known by most as the theme of Indiana Jones. More information and a link to tickets can be found here. Remember: students and others under 30 years of age can attend for only 50 kr.!
Yard sale in my neighborhood!
I am taking the opportunity as the writer of this blog to promote a yard sale in my neighborhood next Thursday, 4 June from 17:00 to 20:00. We have timed it to coincide with Day & Night in Aalborg city center, when shops are open until 22:00. There will be at least six families taking part and lots of items will be for sale, from children’s items to women and men’s clothing to kitchen items. The sale will take place in the green space bordered by the Nørregade, Østergravensgade, and Søndergade streets in the center of Aalborg (click here for the map). There are several entries to the space – directly across from the main library, next to Amerikansk Diner; two entrances from Søndergade; and one from Østergravensgade. We’ll have signs up on the day indicating the entrances. Hope to see you here!
