It is amazing how time gets away with one. This week seemed to fly by – here it is Friday and I’m just turning my attention to the blog. And, as you may have noticed, I’ve been too busy to write any in-depth posts the last couple of months. I have plans for some but they’ve been on the back burner as I’ve taken on more paid work. Still hoping for full-time employment but in the mean time saying yes to a variety of jobs to see where they lead…So here are some ideas for things to do in and around Aalborg over the coming week. By the way, the Events Calendar has been updated.

Science Slam (another one) at CREATE (AAU’s big new building on the harbor) tonight!

Science – boring? No way! Imagine high tempo, sound, lighting, and entertainment. Imagine the latest research presented by six researchers from Aalborg University in just 6 minutes (each?) in front of a large audience in CREATE’s impressive main hall – without the use of PowerPoint and far away from auditoriums and lecture halls. And as part of the audience you do not just watch; you actively participate in the discussion and help decide who is winner of the Science Slam 2015. The event begins at 20:30, but the doors will open at 19:45 and entry is FREE. (Last year we had to turn people away at the door due to overwhelming interest, which is why we’re at a much bigger location.) Drinks, etc. can be purchased at good prices in the bar. Read more and watch videos from last year’s Science Slam here.

Big MTB Marathon tomorrow, starting in Aalborg city center

Aalborg’s annual MTB Marathon 2015 kicks off tomorrow, Saturday, 25 April at 10:00. Cyclists will take off and finish at Nordkraft, forcing traffic off Nyhavnsgade from morning until evening. Participants cycle routes of 30, 55 or 100 km. The 100-km route takes riders on a challenging journey through Aalborg’s beautiful surrounding natural areas, including Mølleparken, Poulstrup, Lundby Krat, Kongshøj, Golfparken, and Østerådalen. If you’re not interested in joining, come out along the route and cheer on the cyclists! You can read more about the race here.

DK-mod-skattely-logo2_0Run against tax havens tomorrow at Mølleparken

Would you like to run tomorrow, Saturday 25 April – against tax havens? Mellemfolkeigt Samvirke, an organization that ‘fights poverty by helping the poor to fight for their rights and break the structures, which holds them back in hunger and poverty,’ has organized a campaign around Denmark called ‘Løb mod skattely’ and you can take part. MS argues that multinationals’ use of tax havens ‘undermines our welfare and promotes extreme inequality in developing countries worldwide.’ Therefore, they are asking any and all to come and run with them; once the total distance run has been calculated it will be sent to Treasurer Benny Engelbrecht to show how far Aalborg is willing to run against speculation in tax havens. You decide how far you want to run. The park where the run will take place is measured in rounds of two kilometers, so you can go 2, 4, 6, 8 or 10 km. No matter how in shape one is, there is the opportunity to make a difference! The run is free to join and there will be refreshments. Everyone can participate – even if you do not want to run. Here is the FB page.

Programme:
11:00 Welcome
11:30 Run starts
12:30 Run finishes, coffee, socializing time and raffles

Wine tasting event, logically sponsored by Aalborg Handball Club, this Saturday!

For the fifth consecutive year, Aalborg Handball Club invites members of the public to their sports hall (at Østre Allé 87) tomorrow, Saturday, 25 April from 13:00 to 17:00 for something completely different than handball: wine tasting. Instead of a team of handball athletes and their fans, the hall will be populated by sommeliers and connoisseurs. Come and try the many different wines and quality food from a variety of producers and importers, most of whom come from North Jutland! Entry is 175 kr./person and tickets can be bought here as well as, I assume, at the door.

flamencoFlamenco performance (guitar and dance) tomorrow night at Huset

Tomorrow evening, Saturday, April 25, Spanish guitarist Ricardo García and Japanese dancer Nanako Aramaki offer a performance of flamenco at Huset beginning at 20:00. This heady, passionate art form is worth seeing at least once in your lifetime. It might even make you want to get up and join in! 🙂 A sample can be found here on YouTube. Garcia & Aramaki often choose to involve local artists when touring – on an improvised basis. This will probably be the case tomorrow as well…Admission: kr. 80 in advance; kr. 100 on the day (students: 40/60 kr.) You can find out more about García here. Event organized by Papaya & Huset with support from the Arts Council and the City of Aalborg. FB event page here.

ultravioletAalbornification’s Ultra Violet Experience is back and ready to shape Aalborg’s electronic history again!

A bigger and more central venue, a lot more paint and UV lights, a more massive lineup, and an even purer sound. Need we say more? Wait – never heard of Ultra Violet? We’re amazed! For the new souls out there, Ultra Violet is more than an event; it is an eccentric experience that lovers of music, art, and beautiful things get together to share. Prepare yourself to be immersed in a new world of light and colors. At our first event last year, we sold out the tickets in two days and ran one of the greatest electronic parties of the Aalborg event scene with 10 artists, a handful of selected DJs, and a pure sound. See our teasers and movie from previous editions on our site here. For electronic music enthusiasts, we have prepared some of the hottest current acts, with several more DJs of an international caliber to be announced. We encourage people to prepay the tickets in order to be sure that they will be granted access to the event. We have only 450 tickets available, so hurry up and grab your spot! However there will be a limited number of tickets available at the entrance. The event takes place from 21:00 at Studenterhuset, tomorrow, Saturday, 25 April. You cannot bring drinks past the security but our bar will provide special UV sensitive drinks that will excite your taste at reasonable prices. Please note that we advise people suffering from epilepsy to not attend this event, as the powerful strobe lights may result in injuries. FB page here.
