A couple of months ago, I was cheeky enough to encourage readers to ‘shake off the flu’ and get out and about in Aalborg. I should have been at least a bit more respectful – a couple of weeks ago (right before Easter holiday week) I caught the flu and I am still coughing and blowing my nose. That would explain the delay in getting back to the blog. However, I figured it is better late than never so here is an abridged version of my weekly ‘Recent & upcoming’ series…Events Calendar now updated.

2014.Modulbilleder.ordkraftnsp_125Ordkraft i Nordkraft…

takes place from yesterday, 9 April, through tomorrow, 11 April. An event held each April in Aalborg, Ordkraft is a festival of the word, which is examined through various means, including author interviews, games, film, music, drama, debates and other activities. The event offers something for all age groups. Tickets are 100 kr./per day and can be purchased in various locations. Most presentations will be in Danish. For parents of Danish-speaking children, an event tomorrow, Saturday, may be of particular interest: titled ‘WUWU at Ordkraft.’ The event features author Merete Pryds Helle, who will introduce participants to a step-in book that magically opens a tale on one’s iPad. We will play in Wuwu’s universe on the iPad and play with words and movement in Nordkraft’s Multisalen. Please bring your own iPad. The event starts at 10:00 and lasts about 90 min. For more information about the festival, visit the event website.

Science Show at AAU tomorrow – promises to be a blast!kemishow

Come to one hell of a show tomorrow, Saturday, 11 April. Literally! Every year the country’s universities put on Science Shows, where they compete against each other to win the prestigious trophy that comes with the title of Denmark’s best Science Show. This year Aalborg University is hosting the chemistry show. It will be a morning of science full of color, smoke, fire, explosions, and, evidently, funny comments. All are welcome, and thanks to sponsorship from Aalborg University and Cheminova there is free admission for all! Events take place in the auditorium at the Niels Jernes way 8A, 9220 Aalborg East from 11:00 to 13:00. Spectators are welcome to arrive 15 minutes before the show starts, so there is peace when we get started. FB event page here.

RAMA (Royal Academy of Music) Festival tomorrow at Musikkens Hus

RAMA invites you to RAMA FESTIVAL 2015 – the academy’s annual festival showcasing student talent – tomorrow, Saturday, 11 April. RAMA is one of the highlights of the year’s time at the Royal Academy of Music. This is where we get the opportunity to show the audience that we are a cultural institution that offers both future musicians and intense meetings with the music. During the day the audience will hear a diversity of expressions and genres, be it rock, jazz, classical, electronic music, or the latest music. I would therefore like to encourage you to take up the challenge and come to Musikkens Hus to see how the talent, hard work and creates joy reflected at the many different concerts. From 12:00 to midnight. See the FB page here. (Incidentally, there is also a RAMA Festival taking place in Aarhus tomorrow – which will attract a larger audience?) I assume – but cannot confirm – that this is free of charge. One performer is Brazilian-born Raphael Gimenes & As Montanhas de Som, who will be performing at 16:00. Not sure if he’s a student but his concert has its own FB page so maybe this is a special event…

Free seminars about how to calculate and pay your yearly SKAT bill

The Danish tax system can be difficult to navigate and hard to understand if you are new in Denmark (or even if you’re not so new). As a result, International House Aalborg and SKAT are pleased to invite you to a tax seminar at Aalborg Main Library next Tuesday, 14 April from 15:30 to 17:30 or from 18:30 to 20:30. Tina Madsen and Pia Lindeskov Jensen from SKAT will give you a presentation of the Danish tax system with a particular focus on: tax returns, tax assessment notice, and the preliminary tax assessment. This will be followed by a hands-on workshop where you will have the possibility of getting assistance from a SKAT consultant from SKAT. The tax seminar is free of charge, but as space is limited, you will need to sign up. Simply write an e-mail to stating your name and which of the two seminars you would like to join (either the one from 3.30 or the one from 6.30). What to bring: a computer/tablet, Nem-Id and key card. For more information, contact Rikke Harboe at or call 9931 1530.

Free showing of The Queen at Aalborg Main Library

Next Thursday, 16 April, which is Queen Margrethe’s birthday, Aalborg Main Library will mark the day with an appropriate English film: The Queen, starring Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth. Synopsis: when Princess Diana is killed in a car accident on Sept. 1, 1997, the British royal family remain silent. Queen Elizabeth does not react publicly, but the newly appointed Prime Minister Tony Blair nicknames Diana the “people’s princess” and gets Queen Elizabeth to step forward and make a statement. Movie starts at 19:00 – no registration necessary. (Film shown in original English with Danish subtitles.)

New in town? Want to meet other families?

Aalborg Main Library invites you and your family for music games, an art workshop and a light lunch in our cozy Children´s Library on Saturday, 18 April from 11:00 to 13:00. Musician Malene Horsmark will guide you through songs and games and a show that appeals to all senses. The art workshop from KUNSTEN is called ”Cut and paper clip.” Peter Juul wlll bring scissors and clips so you can experiment with transforming paper and plastic into funny sculptures. Maybe they can hang from the ceiling? Or should they be transformed into common sculptures? You and your children decide. After the light lunch you´ll have plenty of time to continue networking with the other families and browsing the library. No admission fee and no registration.
