Recent & upcoming: Digital Post deadline looms, music, wellness, robots, circus, workouts, back pain clinic, and more!
As some of you may know, I am currently doing an internship at Aalborg Kommune in the Business Aalborg section. My role is to help plan events and activities that could be useful or interesting to the expat community in Aalborg and strategize about strengthening the international network in the region. Given the positive feedback I get about my blog, I have incorporated this into the job and continue to work on it as part of the internship. One advantage of working here – for the blog – is that I learn about developments that might be important to readers. One of those is directly below. Please take note! It is for this reason that I begin this week’s R&U with ‘news’ rather than ‘events’. Remember, too, to check the Events Calendar for all event listings.
A few months ago it came to my attention that Denmark was marching toward a deadline not experienced anywhere else in Europe: a 100% move to digital communication between government and citizens. That deadline is 1 NOVEMBER 2014. Please read the post I wrote about it here. If you have not signed up to receive your post from the government by digital post, please do! All the links to register are available in the post I referred to above. More information, including where you can get help with registering, is available here (in Danish). And please remind your Danish friends, family members, neighbors, and coworkers about it, too!
Aalborg University gets new director
In November, AAU’s new director will arrive. Antonio Castrone (53) will take over the position held by Peter Plenge since 1998. Castrone has been the CFO at University of Copenhagen the last seven years but at AAU he will be responsible for more than finances, which suits him well. ‘The post covers a very broad area of management. In essence, I am responsible for the entire administration. I have come to know the university sector well during my years in Copenhagen and I have a good impression of both Aalborg and Aalborg University,’ says Castrone. Aalborg University had a financial crunch in 2012 but fared better in 2013 . The new director feels confident in his future workplace. ‘I know that in Morten Vinterberg AAU has an extremely good CFO, and I look forward to working with him. Universities are under financial pressure today, which requires an administration that can make things both cheaper and better.’ The new director was chosen unanimously from a very strong field of 27 candidates by an appointment committee, according to rector Per Michael Johansen.

Aalborg Kommune has prepared a proposal for a new waste management plan, which, among other things, means that residents will have to do more sorting of our garbage and do it better. The waste management plan is currently in public consultation until November 4th. During this period people who have good ideas about how waste should be sorted and handled have the opportunity to put their fingerprints on the plan before it is finally confirmed by the City Council.
In the paper presented at the public consultation stage, all households will have containers for different types of waste, includig a new container with two compartments – one for plastic and for metal. These containers will be emptied every month in urban areas and every other month in rural areas. Each household can also dispose of small electronics and CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs) in separate bags with plastic and metal collection. The collection of household waste will follow a different schedule than it does today – single-family houses should not count on their garbage being collected more frequently than every 14 days. The retrieval of large garbage will stop when the new system for the collection of plastic and metal enters into force. To replace this, there will be collection of garden waste for all households on the same every-14-day schedule as other waste. The annual cost of waste, according to the proposal, will increase slightly when all the new arrangements are implemented and the old ones are phased out.

Art competition winners’ works displayed at Nordkraft through 19 October
50! The number of artists whose work was accepted in the juried Nordkraft Exhibition 2014. And 92 is the number of works that have passed the censorship committee’s critical review, and which can now be seen in the Kunsthal Nord. North Jutland’s first juried exhibition was held in 2012 in Kedelhallen Nordkraft in Aalborg. There were 27 artists accepted with a total of 61 works. This year, hundreds of artists from across the country submitted more than 1,500 works, giving censors the tough job of winnowing the works down for exhibition. All artists, regardless of experience, were welcome to submit their works to the competition. The examiners had no access to information about their identity or age. Works were selected solely on artistic quality. There is a free tour of the exhibit on 8 October from 17:00 to 18:00. On the last day of the exhibit, 19 October, examiner Trine Rytter Andersen will give a talk at 13:00 and tell about the screening process. The Audience Award will be given out the same day at 14:00.
