Recent & upcoming: group skate, shopping, culture, arts & crafts fair, mushrooms, free movies, you name it – it’s here!
I’m amazed by how much there is to do these days in Aalborg (and how long it takes me to write this post lately!) – too much, especially this weekend. So read on and pick the things that interest you most!
Friday Night Skate
Are you ready for some fun and relaxed skating? For tonight’s Friday Night Skate (5 September) Aalborg’s central streets are blocked off, allowing skaters to roll through the city with ease and peace of mind. The event starts from the port in front of the Elbjørn at 19:00. The weather forecast is perfect, and the pace will be easy enough to ensure that everyone can follow stress-free. Come well rested! 🙂
Day&night – shops open til 22:00 tonight!
As part of Aalborg i Rødt week (read more about the week’s activities in last week’s R&U post), Aalborg shops will stay open through 22:00 tonight. So if you’re really not into skating and you are looking for some deals and fun activities, come to Gabels Torv and the surrounding boutiques this afternoon and evening!
Children’s Culture Day
Also as part of Aalborg i Rødt, Children’s Culture Day hits Karolinelund from 10:30 to 15:30 tomorrow, Saturday, 6 September. All sorts of musical performances, art and drama workshops, films, storytelling, and more will be happening in the park for children of all ages. In addition, the ‘zoo car’, a fire truck, ambulance, and police car will be on site for children to explore. Come with the family and spend the day! More information available in the Aalborg i Rødt official program.
Regional food market at Nordkraft
Also taking place tomorrow, Saturday, 6 September, Nordkraft hosts its monthly food market in the center’s main hall. Held every first Saturday of the month, the market offers cheeses, breads, and a variety of other foods produced in North Jutland to sample and buy. Doors are open from 10:00 to 16:00. Click here for more information.
If you prefer to find your own food out in the wild, join nature guide Esben Buch on Saturday, September 6 at 13:00 in Vodskov for a guided tour of areas where you can collect mushrooms. An expert on mushrooms, Esben will lead families on a walk and show them how to pick out non-poisonous mushrooms. If interested, just show up at the parking lot at Gennem Bakkerne 44, Vodskov. There will also be a ‘mushroom control’ stand set up in the parking lot, manned by Henning Christensen from the Foreningen til Svampekundskabens Fremme (Google Translate spit out and I tweaked a bit this translation: Association for the Promotion of Mushroom Knowledge), who will help anyone picking mushrooms sort out their collection. Don’t forget a basket for your fungus and a little knife!
Aalborg-Øst Day September 6
In case you STILL don’t find something you want to do on Saturday, come to Aalborg Øst from 11:00 to 16:30 for a fun family day. Children can try out different activities or compete in games; there will be food stands; and organizations will promote their work at Tornhøj Idrætscenter. More information available here.
Did you know that Symfonien (the home of the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra before they moved to their spiffy new digs at Musikkens Hus) used to be a movie theater? To commemorate its role as such, the final two movie showings in the theater will take place tomorrow and Sunday (6 & 7 September) and entry is free. My Fair Lady, one of the theater’s most popular films when it debuted, will show at 19:30 on Saturday evening, 6 September while on Sunday, 7 September – very appropriately – Cinema Paradiso plays at 16:00. Entry is free – just show up at the dilapidated-looking building on the corner of Kjellerupsgade and Kayerødsgade!
Last ‘Lopper på Havnen’ of the year
This year’s final ‘lopper på havnen’ (‘flea market at the harbor’) will take place this Sunday, 7 September from 11:00 to 16:00 in the area next to the Elbjørn. Lots of stands will be manned by people selling all sorts of goods. Previews of some of these stands are available on the market’s Facebook page.
The Fjord Marathon, another Aalborg i Rødt-associated event, also takes place Sunday, 7 September. The marathon starts at 10:00 from Musikkens Hus, while the half-marathon begins at 11:00, the quarter-marathon at 12:00 and the 5.3km race at 13:00. There will be a grandstand and large screens set up for people to watch at the race’s starting and finishing point.
For the 12th year in a row, Huset will hold its kunsthåndværkermarked (arts and crafts fair), which this year features the works of 40 artists selling their wares. Visitors can choose from a range of products in various media, including ceramics, glass, wood, felt, textiles, jewelry, wicker, and others. The fair takes place Sunday, 7 September from 10:30 to 16:00. Entry is 20kr/person. You can find Huset here.
Danish national under-21 football team plays Bulgaria 9 September
Aalborg Stadium is the site of the second match in the Danish national under-21 team’s pursuit of the European Championship on Tuesday, 9 September. The game begins at 18:00 and entry is FREE so come support the home team! (Or Bulgaria, if you’re Bulgarian) 😉
New beer bar featuring microbrews on tap opening Friday, 12 September in central Aalborg
The beer begins flowing at Aalborg’s new beer bar very soon – 14:00 on Friday, 12 September! Come and join in Basement Beer Bar’s opening celebration by sampling some of the 21 microbrews on tap. More information about the new bar will be available on this FB page over the coming days. (Basement Beer Bar is located here, where the Enten Eller café was formerly located…)
Aalborg Sustainability Festival (Aalborg Bæredygtighedsfestival)
I should make this a separate post, but just to give you a head’s up, Aalborg Sustainability Festival takes place from 13-20 September. Aalborg Kommune has a whole site set up with details about it, which you can find here.
One week each year is Love Aalborg Week, during which volunteers walk the streets and engage in loving Aalborg through high profile events in the city and by offering practical assistance to individuals (called one-to-one activities). Organizers dream of seeing the Love Aalborg vision a priority in the city. One of the events is a day at Nytorv, when passers-by can take part in Love Aalborg by, for example, giving compliments to those who visit the ‘compliment booth’, write nice words on a beautiful stone, or invite their neighbors for coffee. One–on-one activities includee window cleaning, home cleaning, various paint jobs or lending a loving hand to a garden where weeds have taken over. One-to–one focuses on helping individuals, no matter how mundane the task with which they need help. On the Elsk Aalborg website you can sign up as a volunteer or sign up to help with a specific task. This year’s Love Aalborg Week is week 38, 15 to 21 September. All individuals, associations and companies that support the values of helpfulness, hospitality and kindness are invited to participate. Read more about the initiative and this year’s Love Aalborg Week here.

The Aalborg Main Library is kicking off their next series of Expat + Dane Family events on Saturday, 20 September with a music and games activity led by musician Malene Horsmark followed by a light lunch. Every year on the 3rd Sunday of September, farms in Denmark open their stable and barn doors to visitors to see how they operate. This year Open Farms Day takes place on Sunday, 21 September from 10:00 to 16:00. Registration is not necessary and entry to all participating farms is free. There are many different types of farming represented, with everything from dairy cows to sows and piglets and from minks to eggs, mushrooms and cucumbers. At some of the farms it is possible to buy something to drink and eat – read more on the activity list for each farm. Find the farm/s you would most like to visit here.
Sofar Sounds Aalborg’s next living room concert 25 September
A reader alerted me to this initiative in Aalborg: secret, living room concerts for music lovers by local bands. Sofar Sounds identifies itself as ‘the world’s largest music discovery community; curating secret, intimate gigs in unique spaces all around the world.’ The Aalborg chapter is organizing their next concert on the 25th of the month. You can read more about them on their FB page and from there visit the site where you can sign up to join in. Sounds like a very interesting group and concept…
